A very original Speed model currently in regular use.
Delivered new in 1927 to Edwin Foden of ERF truck fame who was a friend of W.O. Bentley and, uniquely, was given authority to carry out service and warranty work in his own workshops.
Foden was a regular client of Bentley and it was a discussion with W.O. which brought about the introduction of the 4½Litre.
Having purchased a 6½ Litre from Bentley he remarked that he "missed the bloody thump of the 4 cylinder engine" and so the 4 ½ Litre engine was born, by reducing the the 6½ litre by two cylinders.
Our 3 Litre here had the lower geared steering fitted in in period, this being considerably lighter than the original 3 litre unit which was designed for Bentleys with beaded edged tyres.
This Bentley has continuous history and is extremely original and unrestored, retaining the Vanden Plas sports body as fitted for Mr. Foden in 1927.
Purchased by an impecunious architect in 1960 this Speed model was very much enjoyed for a period of almost 60 years and travelled regularly between England and France. As the owner's family grew, school fees took priority over restoration hence the originality and maintenance was carried out by a very experienced Bentley engineer who looked after some of the famous Bentleys.
A much enjoyed old school vintage Bentley, often spotted running around the local area.
