This Speed model represents the crackling enthusiasm for the marque which breathed life into Cricklewood Bentleys after the war.
The end of petrol rationing, which carried on intermittently until 1950, saw many of our cars emerge from their slumbers. Enthusiasts with clear memories of the old Bentley company and the daring exploits of the racing drivers of the "roaring twenties" embraced the Bentley phenomenon. They repaired, they raced, they toured, they shared knowledge and went on to form lasting friendships. It was the Golden Age of the vintage Bentley reborn.
Those that wanted some real get up and go and great handling bought a short chassis 3 Litre, purchased a 4 ½ litre engine and drove it with enthusiasm - or to use a modernism "they drove it like they stole it,"
An original 3 Litre Speed model fitted with a 4 1/2 Litre engine in the 1950's and subsequently kept by the same owner for 54 years.
Aside from the engine enhancement this is a matching numbered, short chassis Speed Model which over the last ten years or so has seen considerable expenditure to ensure that it can be used as intended.
The brief was to retain its charm and ensure suitability for rallies and tours. To achieve this no savings account was left unharmed as confirmed by the history file.
Invoices are on file for a complete engine rebuild, radiator , differential rebuild with new half shafts and numerous sundry items.
Now the best bit, Don't think that you are restricted to pre-war motoring events. You can mix this Bentley on tours or rallies with cars from the 1950's to the 1980's and you won't be the last one to the bar in the evening. This is where a proper vintage Bentley shows its stuff.
Not a concours Bentley but not scruffy, just simply well kept and with good history.
