Our world of vintage Bentleys is a game of two halves. Half the enjoyment is from spending so much time with these incredible Cricklewood cars, with their robust engineering and incredible usability on the open road or in modern traffic. After hundreds of thousands of miles, in literally hundreds of vintage Bentleys, our amazement and respect never wains. The all engaging motoring experience and the combination of affection and admiration from bystanders makes every journey an occasion.
A vintage Bentley, in any form, engenders that affection and admiration in the same way as a Shire horse, Spitfire, cricket on a village green, or simply the sight of a pint jug of beer. It’s a peculiarly British thing – we’re a funny old crowd.
The other half is the people we meet. Vintage Bentleys have been the catalyst that have brought so many people together, so many of whom have formed lasting friendships, lasting generations. There’s nothing flash, no bling, just people who enjoy motoring and having a good time.
The adventures and journeys people have undertaken in vintage Bentleys all over the world, through deserts, across Iceland, racing, rallying, touring – and one or two indiscretions which a gentleman never repeats – are not the stuff of legends they are the stuff of events which have taken place and continue to do so.
That game of two halves makes a great match.
So that rambling brings us to the Bentley here which has been hugely enjoyed by its owner of the last fifty eight years. Records show it has had just six owners in total. Such long-term ownership has created many memories from a Bentley which has been so hugely enjoyed and which has retained a careworn charm.
That charm is coupled with the fact that this 4 ½ Litre retains its 1928 Cricklewood components, engine, D type gearbox, axles, chassis, steering box, twin Sloper carburettors and differential all as dispatched from the factory in July of 1928.
The original service records show the coachwork by Vanden Plas who then modified it in period to a sportsman’s coupe body, which underwent repairs, due to dilapidation, by Messrs. Woodall Nicholson in the late 1960’s at a cost which would have bought a new Mini at that time.
The owner of the last fifty eight years achieved not inconsiderable success in engineering and as such his knowledge and attention to mechanical detail is well documented in the extensive history file. Upon driving this 4 ½ she started on the button and drove extremely well creating that very special vintage Bentley feeling.
Never intended as a concours example this is just a lovely, cosy, comfy Bentley which wants to be enjoyed just as it has by its owner of over half a century.
A picture may be worth a thousand words. A vintage Bentley writes the whole book.#
